Good morning, and Happy Summer! Welcome to Saturday Morning Garden Blogging.
Denver had a stretch of coolish, spring-like weather earlier this week, with highs ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-70s, and lows in the 40s. We even got a few spurts of rain.
And just in time for the start of cultural summer, we’re switching into more summer-like temperatures over the long weekend with highs in the mid-80s.
We’re now in the midst of a succession of bearded iris coming into bloom. I don’t know the name of this one — I planted it two or three years ago and it’s just coming into its own this year.
With the wonderful weather this week I managed to cram in a few hours out in the garden.
In the veggie patch, the tomatoes are planted and caged and the zucchetta and cucumbers are basking in the warmth of their wall-o-waters. The pile of completed compost was shoveled into the wheelbarrow, preparatory to turning the space it occupied into the leek trench. The newly-emerged melon plants are hardening off on the front porch. And I dug out the Maximillian sunflower that never bloomed for me — a friend of the Mister has a home for it.
On Tuesday I did a run up to Paulino Garden and bought a few perennials to fill in spots bared by winterkill, and baby leeks, cauliflower, and eggplant. The beautiful hanging baskets were very tempting but in June I’ll be able to find them on sale.
Wednesday… a quick trip to Pueblo to deliver tomato and melon plants to my mother in law.
And, of course, always the lingering walks to and from anywhere, stopping to pull a few weeds, or check the progress of the flowers.
That's what's happening here. What's going on in your gardens?
