Good morning, and surprise! Welcome to Saturday Morning Garden Blogging.
The first surprise is that I am your host today instead of Merry Light: Merry's spousal unit planned an out-of-town adventure, so we're swapping weeks. Which works well for me as I'll have my birthday weekend off (and jayden won't be able to pull any sneaky tricks on me like he did last year!)
The second surprise? Well — Denver's weather. It's been bouncing around like a ping pong ball. Last Sunday was gorgeous, as the high went into the low 60s; Tuesday the high stayed in the mid-30s; Thursday? Above 60 again.
Which brings us to this weekend, when we could get a foot of snow.
WTF? All winter long I prayed for snow. It was so damned dry I feared for the survival of the grass and perennials.
Now when I need for it to stay dry for a few days so I can go out and do yard work? It fucking snows.
I just can't win.
Last Sunday I did make some progress in readying for the growing season. The back yard and veggie patch were still covered with snow, as were the parking strip flower beds. But the main beds by the house were melted out, if soggy.
I did what I could without tromping too much on the wet soil: clipped back the perennials; raked out then vacuumed up the leaves and other debris; pruned the miniature roses.
And exposed a bountiful bunch of blooming crocus and miniature iris — much to the delight of the neighborhood. I do so love hearing from passers-by how much they look forward to my yearly display. It's nice to have one's efforts appreciated and a good ego boost.
I figured that by mid-week, when the nicest weather was set to arrive, I'd be able to take an afternoon away from my little office to finish up the front beds and get started on the parking strip.
And then… damn it and hooray at the same time — I got a new client with a project that couldn't be put off. I mean, I needed to impress at my speed, efficiency and accuracy, right?
So there went my afternoon off.
And by yesterday the weather was flipping with clouds covering the sky.
And it's supposed to snow all day today.
So maybe by next weekend I'll be able to get out and get the garden ready. I hope so, because it's about time to be planting the snap peas.
That's what's happening here. What's going on in your gardens?
